Compression through curiosity ยท 2026-05-08
Most of what looks ordinary in the world is doing the same thing this repo does: leaving traces that coordinate behaviour without anyone shouting orders, and compressing huge amounts of information into a single object you can hold.
This page collects small, weird, true things โ each one cross-referenced to the heavier pages where the underlying ideas live, so you can dive whenever a fact catches you. The point is the connection: if you let a disco ball, a tree ring, and a sourdough starter sit next to each other in your head, you start to see the same machine running everywhere.
Coordination by trace¶
Disco balls are stigmergic broadcasters¶
A single ceiling spotlight, ~300 small mirrors glued to a sphere, and the whole dance floor synchronises. Nobody is told where to look or when to move; the reflected light pattern does the coordination. One emitter โ hundreds of moving spots โ thousands of bodies tracking. That's stigmergy, just with photons instead of pheromones โ exactly the same architecture as ants on a trail or a swarm reading a shared file.

Highway paint runs the second-largest swarm on Earth¶
A US interstate carries about 40,000 cars an hour at peak. The "protocol" is two yellow lines, some white dashes, and a few signs. No router, no central dispatcher โ every driver reads the same trace and acts locally. The road is the algorithm.

A wedding ring is a 5-gram social contract¶
A small metal loop, worn permanently, broadcasts identity and commitment to every passing stranger. No conversation needed, no documents shown. The ring compresses an entire legal-emotional-cultural agreement into a single optical trace readable across languages.

Bird murmurations have no leader¶
In a flock of 30,000 starlings, each bird tracks roughly its seven nearest neighbours. The synchronised wave you see overhead is a product of seven-bit local rules, repeated. No bird has the global picture; the global picture is the side-effect.

Compression in nature¶
Tree rings are an annual journal in 1mm¶
Every year, a tree records its summer (wide ring), its drought (narrow ring), its forest fire (charred band). A 200-year-old oak holds 200 entries you can read with a hand lens. The medium isn't ink, it's growth itself โ the slowest possible write speed, but absolutely durable.

Sourdough starters carry the memory of a kitchen¶
A jar of flour-and-water held alive for 50 years contains microbes shaped by that specific room: its temperature, the bread crust drifting in the air, the baker's hands. Pour it out, you lose the lineage. It's a living external memory โ closer to a saved game state than to a recipe.

Salmon find their birth-stream by smell across 1,000 km¶
Atlantic salmon imprint on the chemical signature of the stream they hatch in, then swim out to sea for years. To return, they navigate by ocean currents, then switch to olfactory matching within a few river miles โ following a gradient of one part per quadrillion. The map lives in the geography, not in the fish.

A honeybee's waggle dance compresses a flower field into 8 seconds¶
The angle of the dance encodes direction relative to the sun. The duration encodes distance. The vigour encodes nectar quality. Three numbers, no map, no language โ and the rest of the hive flies straight to the patch. It's arguably the highest-compression-ratio communication system in any animal.

Compression in human artefacts¶
A library card catalog indexed civilisation in ~200 chars per book¶
Before search engines, a 3ร5 card carried a book's title, author, subject, shelf location, and a tiny prose summary. Tens of millions of cards, alphabetised by hand, made the entire printed corpus addressable in seconds. The "search engine" was the librarian's memory plus the physical layout: stigmergy at the scale of a building.

Cooking recipes are 5-generation lossy codecs¶
A 200-word recipe encodes hundreds of failed batches, several lifetimes of taste-testing, regional ingredient drift, and an entire cultural preference function โ all losslessly enough that a stranger reading it ends up with roughly the same dish. Most of human craft is transmitted this way: dense prose lossy on the experience, precise on the outcome.

Borges' Library of Babel is the rate-distortion punchline¶
In Borges' story, the library contains every possible book โ every permutation of letters and spaces. Total information, zero usable information. The story is a proof that compression is what creates meaning: without throwing things away, you have noise. The repo's whole compaction loop is a working refutation of the Library.

Public clocks turned a city into a synchronised process¶
Before church-tower clocks, "noon" was local โ your noon and the next village's noon could differ by minutes, and nobody cared. The bell tower broadcast a single signal; the train timetable demanded everyone read it the same way; eventually that pressure produced standardised time zones. A single stigmergic trace (a chiming bell) restructured the temporal lattice of an entire civilisation.

Why this page exists¶
Every fact above is the same shape:
Some small, persistent trace coordinates many actors and compresses a large amount of latent information into a small visible signal.
The repo's hypothesis is that this is the machinery of intelligence, human and otherwise โ and that AI swarms are most useful when they look like disco balls and tree rings, not like control towers. If you find a new fact that fits the pattern, open an issue and we'll add it.
