Prior: Sleep is not rest — it is an active, offline batch process that performs two coupled operations: consolidating signal (slow-wave replay promotes high-rehearsal traces to stable long-term storage) and pruning noise (synaptic homeostasis weakens under-rehearsed neighbours of the consolidated traces). These operations are inseparable: you cannot selectively get the memory benefits of sleep without also accepting the forgetting that comes with it. The quality of your waking cognition on any given day is therefore a direct function of the fidelity of the previous night's compression run.
Moonshot (OPT∘OPT): If sleep quality is the primary determinant of cognitive bandwidth — not talent, not motivation, not training volume — then a population-level shift from poor to adequate sleep quality would produce measurable uplift in creative output, learning rate, and decision quality comparable to raising average IQ by 10–15 points, at near-zero marginal cost. Sleep engineering (environment, scheduling, architecture) becomes the highest-ROI cognitive enhancement available, outperforming all training, nutrition, and pharmacological stacks combined.

Testable-if: A 4-week within-subjects experiment: 7.5h+ sleep weeks vs. 6h weeks (confirmed actigraphy), measuring working-memory slot count, novel problem-solving rate, and cortisol AUC — degradation in the short-sleep condition with effect sizes dwarfing same-period nutrition or supplementation interventions.

operating assumption. The agent asks: is this knowledge structure portable?
